At Matthew Ling photography I have been helping interior designers showcase their projects for over 15 years. In that time I have worked with large interior architects such as Macauley Sinclair, Neolith and Escape & Co. and as well as independent designers.
I have worked with 50 year old companies who operate globally to sole traders working on their first documented project. I find both of these extremely rewarding. The projects I photograph range from a 40-bed hotel conversion to a single bedroom for a beginner interior designers’ portfolio.

The art of interior design photography
I consider interior design photography to be the most challenging and often as a result, the most rewarding field of photography that I’ve operated in. The delicate balance of natural and artificial light, the inviting framing and the interpretation of lush fabrics and materials all play a huge part in conveying the extravagance of great interior design.
I am inspired to arrive in spaces that have been intelligently perceived and crafted and my passion enables me to work with a client to achieve a highly successful series of images that fully relate to the viewer the skills that they possess.
Photographing light in interior spaces is an art that transforms the mundane into the magnificent. Each ray of sunlight streaming through a window or the soft glow of a carefully positioned lamp can create captivating compositions within a room.
In the hands of a skilled photographer, light becomes a dynamic element that shapes the atmosphere and highlights the design details of a space. Capturing the interplay between light and shadow requires a keen eye for composition and a deep appreciation of how illumination defines the mood of a room.

Photographers adept at photographing light in interior spaces know how to harness natural and artificial light sources to create compelling visual narratives. Understanding the Space:
Before taking any photographs, it's important that I understand the design and layout of the space. This includes noting the key features, architectural details, and overall ambiance. This can inform me on how I approach the project as a whole.
Equipment:
I work exclusively in the built environment and as such my equipment is primed for such projects. Shooting with the latest mirrorless cameras and lenses and using lighting setups that are specific to interior photography allows me to approach this as not a ‘jack of all trades’ but as a specialist interiors photographer. I have encountered many issues and problems in my 15 years and as such have built a repertoire of techniques to sidestep these issues and produce high quality imagery for each of my clients
Composition:
Composition plays a critical role in interior design photography. I will carefully frame each shot to highlight the best aspects of the space at hand. This involves considering the placement of furniture, lighting fixtures, and decorative elements within the frame.
Lighting:
Correct lighting is essential for capturing interior spaces effectively. Natural light is often preferred for its soft and inviting quality, but it may also bring about certain hues that are unwanted in the final image. Likewise artificial light can also look too clinical for an image that needs to be inviting and warm. I use a combination of both natural and artificial light to produce an image that perfectly embodies the projects that my clients create
Staging:
Arranging the space for the photograph is akin to staging a scene. This involves tidying up clutter, arranging furniture and decor in an aesthetically pleasing way, and sometimes adding or removing items to achieve a balanced composition.
Use of Lenses:
I commonly use wide-angle lenses in interior photography to capture the expansiveness of the space and to fit all the aspects of a space in to the frame. However, I also use a range of zoom focal lengths in order to capture small, beautiful details of each project.
Focus on Materials and Textures:
I often highlight the materials and textures used in a space; such as wood grain, lush fabric textures, or the pristine sheen of metal surfaces. This adds depth and tactile appeal to the photographs I produce.
Perspective and Angles:
Experimenting with different perspectives and angles can transform how a space is perceived in a photograph. Shooting from a low angle can emphasise height and grandeur, while shooting from a higher angle can make a space feel more intimate. I use my intuition to play with a scene in order to create views that appear fresh and vibrant.
Post-Processing:
I use post-processing techniques I have spent 15 years attaining to fine-tune photographs; adjusting colours, contrast, and sharpness to enhance the overall impact of the image while maintaining a natural look. I also complete lens correction alterations on each image and vertical perspective corrections when required.
Overall, interior design photography requires a blend of technical skill, artistic vision, intuition and a deep understanding of photography and interior spaces. The goal is to capture the essence and emotion that a designed space evokes.
Collaboration:
I understand that the client is the most important aspect of any interiors shoot. They may have ideas or images in their head that they want to see in reality just as they imagine them. My job as a collaborator is to work through these ideas and thoughts and help produce the scene that they are so passionate about, while also making other suggestions that may elaborate further on the designers vision.
